Ellisville Marsh is a treasured community and environmental resource in Plymouth, MA. In 1991, the MA Department of Conservation and Recreation acquired nearly 100 acres of marsh and upland, establishing the Ellisville Harbor State Park. In 2003, 51 acres south of the state park was donated to Wildlands Trust, establishing Shifting Lots Preserve. In 2007, the Friends of Ellisville Marsh, Inc. was formed, and Wildlands has worked closely with them to steward this unique preserve ever since.

Learn the history of the land and how a community came together to conserve and steward Ellisville Marsh.

Part 1: The Talk - Register

Ellisville Marsh is the environmental gem of America's oldest town. Its tidal inlet had been maintained for centuries by local residents until restrictive regulations were introduced in the 1980s. In 1991, the No-Name Storm, aka Perfect Storm, blocked the inlet, and it remained untouched for more than a decade. The Friends of Ellisville Marsh, Inc., picked up where the fishermen left off and has maintained the salt marsh's tidal inlet ever since. Wildlands Trust restricted vehicular access to the property and created Shifting Lots Preserve in 2003. Eric will talk about the unique natural features present at Ellisville Marsh and his organization's long-standing work to safeguard them.

Meet at Wildlands Trust’s Community Conservation Barn at Davis-Douglas Farm, 675 Long Pond Road, Plymouth, MA 02360.
Parking is available along the gravel road. Then walk up the gravel walkway to meet us inside the barn.
From Route 3: Take Exit 7 (old Exit 3) and head southwest on Clark Road. Turn left at the intersection onto Long Pond Road. Turn sharp right into Wildlands Trust’s headquarters at Davis-Douglas Farm.

About the Speaker
Eric Cody is co-founder and president of the Friends of Ellisville Marsh, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in Plymouth, Massachusetts. He has been deeply involved since 2007 in the organization’s efforts to revitalize Ellisville Marsh, which lies partly in the Wildlands Trust's Shifting Lots Preserve and partly in Ellisville Harbor State Park. His book Rescuing Ellisville Marsh: the Long Fight to Restore Lost Connections, was published in 2023 by the University of Massachusetts Press. The book weaves the story of a fragile ecosystem with a community's fifteen-year effort to restore its vitality. Eric is a graduate of Amherst College and Harvard University and a former Naval officer.
